St. Joseph Healthcare was founded in 1947 by the Felician Sisters of the Enfield, Connecticut Province. St. Joseph Healthcare’s ministry is rooted in the tradition of Felician foundress Blessed Mary Angela’s vision of spirituality – renewing society through compassionate caring of the whole person in all circumstances.

From its beginnings as a small private hospital in 1947, St. Joseph Healthcare has grown into a healthcare organization comprised of a 112-bed community hospital and a network of several specialty and primary care provider practices located throughout Bangor and in three nearby municipalities.

St. Joseph Healthcare employs more than 1,100 people, all committed to our mission to care for others. St. Joseph Healthcare’s focus has always been to provide quality health care services, both inpatient and outpatient, based on community needs. Current trends in healthcare have led the organization to further emphasis services relative to primary care, wellness and prevention.

St. Joseph Healthcare’s commitment to Care Management models allows patients to be in control of their own care plans and connects them with the specific support services that will help them get the most from their care and maximize their quality of life. Such models have been shown to play a vital role in enhancing the overall health of communities.

Inspired by Blessed Angela’s commitment to wholistic caring, St. Joseph Healthcare’s dedication to healthy communities goes far beyond direct health concerns. The organization is deeply committed to advocating on behalf of those who are disadvantaged and underserved. St. Joseph employees continually endeavor to assist people in need in our community, through devoting time and talent to local nonprofit organizations. These include the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, where St. Joe's employees regularly volunteer to serve hot, nutritious food prepared by our Hospital Kitchen staff. In addition, the Hospital laundry provides complimentary bed linen service to the Shelter. Employees also volunteer to serve lunch on a regular basis at the Bangor Salvation Army's Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen. Numerous other Mission-centered volunteer initiatives also aid needy kids and families in our region throughout the year.

Over the years, St. Joseph Healthcare has donated millions in funds, goods and services both to the Bangor community and the global community; in 2015 St. Joseph Healthcare provided a community benefit in the amount of $1,402,973.

St. Joseph Healthcare maintains numerous Provider Practices in Primary Care and various specialties. The St. Joseph Primary Care network encompasses six practices comprised of more than 45 providers in Bangor and surrounding communities.

St. Joseph Healthcare is a member of Covenant Health, a Catholic health system whose mission to advance the healing mission of Christ parallels the philosophy of Felician foundress Blessed Mary Angela. With its headquarters in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, Covenant Health consists of hospitals, skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers, assisted living residences, and community-based health and elder care organizations throughout New England and Pennsylvania. Nearby Covenant members or affiliates include St. Mary's Health System in Lewiston, Maine, and the Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bangor.
