MARGARET MORFORD. Earning Respect for HR: Putting Spectacles on the Elephant. Are you tired of working really hard and being seen as a "necessary evil" within your organization? Margaret Morford, CEO of the HR Edge in Brentwood, Tennessee, identifies three crucial areas in which HR professionals need to have impact to be seen as contributors and not just as administrators. She will present five personal, break-through questions all HR professionals must ask themselves in order to gain respect from senior level executives. Her practice tips will provide a great roadmap to help you transform HR's role within your organization.
- 2:15pm-3:45pm - Program A-1: Great Job! Staff Recognition.
Strategic Emphasis on Staff Recognition.
Lack of appreciation is the #1 reason people leave their employers. In survey after survey, year after year, “Being Recognized and Appreciated” ranks in the top three work satisfiers, higher than pay and benefits. Yet many managers view employee appreciation as the warm, fuzzy stuff, and some HR professionals rely on tired, tactical recognition programs. In this fast-paced and interactive session, David Pease (Vice President – Human Resources, Sebasticook Valley Hospital) will share a hundred low-cost and creative recognition techniques to promote your organization’s vision and values, while enhancing staff retention. The emphasis will be on linking these ideas to a strategic focus, which will facilitate your organization’s core values and reinforce and celebrate desired work behaviors.
- 2:15pm-3:45pm - Program A-2: Dreamer! Make Your Dreams a Reality.
14 Years in a Maine Lighthouse.
What do lighthouses and HR have in common? Lee Ann Szelog will share the challenges she overcame and the goal-setting techniques she uses to achieve her dreams, one of which was living in a lighthouse. If you are looking to achieve more in your personal or professional life and help others in your organization do the same, then join Lee Ann for some inspiring words, encouragement, strategy and easy-to-use methods to help make your dreams a reality. Lee Ann is co-author of “Our Point of View – Fourteen Years at a Maine Lighthouse” and is Vice President of Education and Development at Camden National Bank.
- 2:15pm-3:45pm - Program A-3: E-Danger! Computer Issues at Work.
Employment Issues in Cyberspace!
Cyberspace is creating a whole new world for human resources. Think of all the computer-related issues generated by employees both at and outside of work. Blogging! MySpace and other information sources! Anne-Marie Storey from Rudman & Winchell will take us on an electronic journey involving issues of privacy, regulation of off-duty conduct, NRLA concerted activity, whistleblower issues, and retaliation. Let’s look at whether employers should be using MySpace and other sources to obtain information about applicants and current employees and how that could be discriminatory – employers engage in a very important balancing act between having the information available, which could implicate negligent hire or retention claims, versus not finding out or using discriminatory information in hiring or other decisions.
- 2:15pm-3:45pm - Program A-4: Psychological First Aid for Your Employees.
Supporting Employees When They Need it Most!
A traumatic event in your workplace or community may have a profound impact on your employees. HR professionals can find themselves in uncharted territory when asked to manage these situations, and while seeking help from a trained critical incident support professional is important, there are some basic guidelines for what you can do if you find yourself in a front line support role. Catharine MacLaren, LCSW, CEAP, Regional Director of Affiliated EAP in Portland, will provide you with an understanding of: 1) What constitutes a traumatic event; 2) Best practices for providing initial support for employees; 3) “Normal” reactions to traumatic experiences; 4) How to support an employee returning to work after a traumatic event; 5) What constitutes cause for concern for a particular employee; and 6) Why some people appear to have little to no reaction while others react strongly.
- 2:15pm-3:45pm - Program A-5: The Difference Between Managing and Leading. Advanced Level.
Senior Level Session.
As the labor pool shrinks, employees will examine more carefully the people for whom they are willing to work. More and more the type of management that exists within an organization will become the deciding factor for whether the organization will be able to retain its current employees as well as attract new ones. This presentation differentiates leadership skills from management characteristics and asks participants to answer eight hard-hitting questions about their ability to lead others. The information will revolutionize thinking about leadership and the way people need to be hired and managed in the future. Presenter: Margaret Morford from the HR Edge in Brentwood, Tennessee.
- 4:15pm-5:00pm - Second Convention Keynote.
Hosted by our Friends at Lebel & Harriman.
MEAGAN JOHNSON. Stop Me Before I Strangle Someone. Based on her pioneering work on how to maintain balance and perspective in a constantly chaotic and stressful environment, Meagan Johnson, from Phoenix, Arizona, helps you “Unchain Your Brain.” Meagan is not an Olympic athlete, and she has a very slow metabolic rate to prove it. She is not a CEO. She has not brought a company back from the brink of bankruptcy, but she has figured out how we become our own worst enemies and what we can do about it. Yes, you can be rational in an emotional world.
