“HR Challenges in a High Growth Environment." Joshua Broder joins us from Portland, where he leads Tilson, a high growth technology deployment company, on the Inc. 5000 list of America's fastest growing companies for six consecutive years. He’ll share the story of how the company has grown from 10 to over 200 employees in those six years by having a "high performance happy" culture. He’ll talk about the HR challenges inherent in a high growth environment and the cultural impact of growth - both the opportunities and challenges. He will also touch on his company's veteran hiring practices and the tension between professionalizing HR and maintaining operational leader responsibility for developing people.

Please join this lively discussion with Bob Montgomery-Rice, CEO of Bangor Savings Bank and one of Maine’s most forward-looking executives. He will share the bank’s storied history and his personal story about how HR roots enhance his work as CEO. Moderator David Pease (and the audience) will engage with Bob on a wide array of business subjects, among them: 1) how HR leaders at Bangor Savings communicate with other team leaders; 2) the role of social responsibility and community in the bank’s strategic plans; 3) the role of strong community banks in Maine’s economic development; and 4) his take on HR issues of the day – innovation, diversity, and the quest for talent.

1:00 - 2:00     Autism in the Workplace: Managing Hidden Talent

   Keynote Presentation by Derek and Dylan Volk

Derek Volk, author of “Chasing the Rabbit, A Dad’s Life Raising a Son on the Spectrum,” teams up with his son Dylan Volk in this powerful story. Tens of thousands of teens and young adults with autism are entering (or trying to enter) the workforce. This is a population with intense focus, a facility with Derek and Dylan Volk numbers and patterns, and they are ready for success if managers are willing to work with them. Derek speaks from two points of experience: 1) As owner of Volk Packaging in Biddeford, where 6% of the workforce has developmental or physical disabilities. The people at Volk play to the strengths of this workforce by adjusting managerial styles to meet individual needs. The result is low turnover, incredible loyalty, and exceptional productivity. 2) How he and his wife (Maine State Senator Amy Volk) raised their son Dylan, who was diagnosed with Asperger's at the age of eight. Dylan, as his father quickly points out, is the star of this show. He has become a folk hero to those on the spectrum - he is articulate, insightful and funny, and the host of a radio talk show and a YouTube comedian. He’ll share stories of employment – poignant, thought provoking material for us all.
